Steam Next Fest October 2026: how to find demos worth finishing
The October festival runs October 19–26. This method turns hundreds of temporary demos into a manageable shortlist.
Steam Next Fest returns from October 19 through October 26, 2026. Its value is access: players can sample upcoming games without buying them. Its weakness is abundance. A useful plan must protect play time from recommendation loops, unfinished downloads, and demos selected only because they already have attention.
Start with a question, not a genre
Choose two things you want the week to answer. Perhaps you want a tactics game with readable information, a co-op game that works with two players, or a short narrative game that respects an evening. Questions produce better filters than broad labels such as action or indie.
Create a first-pass queue of no more than twelve demos. Include a few obvious releases, several games with specific mechanical hooks, and at least two titles outside your normal tags. A festival becomes valuable when it tests taste rather than merely confirms it.
Use a thirty-minute demo protocol
Give each demo ten minutes to establish controls and intent. Continue for another twenty only if you can identify a decision, sensation, or narrative question worth pursuing. Technical failure can end the session earlier, but record whether the issue is performance, onboarding, input, or concept.
Do not demand that every demo climax. Vertical slices and early builds serve different purposes. Instead ask whether the game communicates what the player can learn, whether feedback matches actions, and whether friction feels deliberate or unfinished.
Read the store page after playing
Playing first prevents marketing language from supplying an experience the demo did not create. Afterward, compare the build with the developer's stated features, release window, platform support, and multiplayer requirements. Wishlist only when the promised full game extends something you already found interesting.
Check whether the developer identifies the demo as representative, outdated, or festival-specific. A polished slice can still conceal scope risk, while a rough build may communicate a strong system that has time to improve.
Turn notes into useful recommendations
A helpful demo recommendation names the build played, approximate session length, input method, performance conditions, and the exact reason to continue watching. It avoids calling an unfinished game a masterpiece or treating wishlists as review scores.
PushB will use this protocol for its October coverage. The aim is not a list of fifty names. It is a smaller record of demos that created durable questions—and a clear explanation when a promising pitch did not survive contact with the build.
Sources and transparency
PushB independently selected and researched this topic. No publisher, platform, team, or developer paid for inclusion. Release information can change; linked primary sources should be treated as the latest authority.
